STAGE ONE: Food insecurity

There has been a poor harvest and rural families have to adopt survival strategies.

Tactics include:

  • families sell disposable assets: excess livestock, small animals, jewellery, furniture…

  • men migrate in search of work

  • communities fall back on their cereal banks

  • some take out loans

  • families reduce their food intake, and eat more wild foods or cheaper foods

  • families spend less on healthcare and education

  • According to MSF, interventions by aid agencies and governments at this early stage should focus on the preservation of people's livelihoods, by giving them food for work which helps them to stay in their villages.

Early warning systems are crucial at this stage. If food shortages are not spotted quickly enough by governments and aid agencies, they can develop
    into a crisis.

Fewer than one person in 10,000 people dies
every day, according to MSF Medical Director
    Elizabeth Le Saout.
