SLIDESHOW: Western Sahara dispute
TAFARITI, in the "liberated zone" of Western Sahara - Sahrawi soldiers march in a parade in Tifariti marking the 30th anniversary of the declaration of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR). The SADR, recognised by over 70 countries worldwide but not by the United Nations, declared by refugees who fled the Moroccan and Mauritanian military annexation in 1975 of former Spanish Sahara, now Western Sahara. The Sahrawi fought a bitter and protracted guerrilla war against the Moroccan military until a ceasefire in 1991. Frustration over lack of progress through diplomatic means has lead to fears that the conflict could, once again, become violent. |
