TIFARITI, in the "liberated zone" of Western Sahara - A group of Sahrawi men relax on an abandoned Moroccan tank after ceremonies marking the 30th anniversary of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic in exile. This is the first year the Polisario have held their anniversary celebrations in the “liberated zone” - the area of Western Sahara under their control - rather than in Algerian refugee camps. There is an unspoken fear that young and frustrated refugees will form extreme splinter groups and reject the Polisario’s official support for a peaceful, diplomatic solution.
