Extreme weather threatens Mongolians with hunger and poverty
BANGKOK (AlertNet) - An unusually severe winter following a summer drought risks pushing almost 200,000 people into hunger and deeper poverty in Mongolia, the United Nations has warned.

Daily temperatures have fallen below -40 degrees Celcius in most of the country - well below habitual winter temperatures of -15 to -35 degrees. As a result, more than one million livestock have already died, according to the National Emergency Management Agency.

BANGKOK (AlertNet) - Aid workers and rights activists are worried about the fate of over 4,500 Hmong asylum-seekers who were forcibly returned to Laos from Thailand a month ago despite concerns voiced by the United Nations and United States that some could face persecution at home.

Lao authorities have refused the U.N. and aid agencies access to the returned Hmongs since their repatriation on Dec 28 and 29. The group included 158 people recognised as refugees by the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR.

BANGKOK (AlertNet) - Name a natural disaster, any disaster. Be it a typhoon, earthquake, volcanic eruption, landslide or tsunami -- all 10 countries that make up Southeast Asian bloc ASEAN have experienced them all.

The region suffered 152 natural disasters in 2008 according to ASEAN, with the biggest being Cyclone Nargis which tore through Myanmar killing nearly 140,000 people.

Climate change brings new flooding dangers for Bangkok
BANGKOK (AlertNet) - Bustling Bangkok faces a danger more threatening than class divisions and political stalemate, its usual worries. It is sinking, scientists say.

This isn't a new discovery in a low-lying city where flooding is a way of life. Thunderstorms and high tides bring torrents of water to many of the city's neighbourhoods. For years, hundreds of pumps and a network of canals have been pumping floodwater back into the Chao Phraya River. Dikes and flood walls prevent the water from surging back into the city.
