Bahrain held its second Parliamentary elections in its modern history this week, with about 300,000 voters going to the polls. Amongst them was Bahraini blogger Haythoo, who hoped his ‘party’ would emerge victorious.

“I am now off to cover the Parliamentary elections. I hope we get the majority votes. We should do what the leaders have said and go down to the streets,” he noted, in
reference to a religious edict which encouraged Bahrainis to vote this year.
During the previous elections, four years ago, several political societies (political parties are banned in
Bahrain) boycotted the elections under the pretext that the Bahraini Constitution was “unconstitutional”. Blogger Fareed Isa too was looking forward to exercising his right to elect his representatives in Parliament and the municipal councils. Ù ÙÙÙ

“It’s a beautiful day today which I hope will end peacefully. Those who don’t
win a seat in parliament or the municipal councils will hopefully serve this country through other avenues which is something better than sitting and waiting for four years for luck, which may or may
not smile on them. The end result for every citizen is to serve this beautiful nation and this is how it should be. During the period of campaigning for the elections, many candidates gave a lot of
promises and hopes to people, which should not be forgotten or lost simply because they were elected to their seats because they gave people hope and those MPs and councillors should not forget their
pledges,” he said.
Away from the Bahraini elections - but still in Bahrain - Blogger Khalid is concerned about the death of three young children, when their house burned down. Ù

“A few days ago, three children were killed when a fire broke out in the apartment they lived
in Salmaniya. Some said the fire was caused by just a candle! The candle burned a curtain..the candle which was lit to disperse the darkness and the lack of electricity. The children died of
suffocation for their apartment was with no power. And here I would like to ask: was it an issue of awareness or was it a problem of poverty and need? On the background of this tragedy, are there
other Bahraini families living in darkness because their electricity was cut by an administrative order and not because of technical faults? An unofficial source has stressed to me that in a town like
Muharraq, 10 families have their electricity cut on average every month because they cannot afford to pay their bills,” he wrote.
In nearby Saudi Arabia, Raed Al Saeed is
having difficulties understanding freedom of expression and what it means in different contexts. Ø£Ù

ع Michael Richards.
“It’s either that I am stupid or that the rest of the civilised world is. I think the first option is better! I
tried my level best to understand what freedom of expression means but I couldn’t. When they insult our Prophet it is called freedom of expression and they don’t have to even apologise.
But in France, shedding doubt on the reality of the Holocust commited by the Nazis against the Jews is a crime! At the same time, questioning the existance of God isn’t! In Poland, defaming the
Catholic Church and the President of the State is a crime, punishable by law, but when the Pope defames Islam, he is exercising his freedom of expression. In free America, if you are black you can
call other blacks Nigger but not if you are white as has happened with Michael Richards,” he explained.
Our last stop is with war, destruction and the smell of death in Iraq, where Imad Khadduri from Free Iraq, paints a painful picture of the suffering his
country and people are witnessing. ÙÙ ÙتÙ٠سÙترÙ

“How many families without support will the victims leave behind? How many women will
leave their orphans behind? How many killed and wounded will be there? Who will compensate the families of the victims? What compensation is there for those who have lost their mothers, fathers,
husbands and brothers? What about the horrified passers-by running in Sadr City and those surrounded and cannot escape in Al Adamiya and Al Kadhemiya, who are being bombarded? What about the blood
which is being mixed with the sands of our nation and the charred remains of human flesh? What about the smell of death in a country where death has become synonymous to life in Iraq and where the
smell of roses used to fill our streets before? What about all the bodies of unknown people? How many times in a week do you read the following item in the newspaper: Police yesterday found the bodies
of 52 unidentified people in different areas of Baghdad. Most of the bodies had their hands tied and eyes covered, with evidence of torture and gun shots on the corpses?” he said.
