If you think your health authorities should be protecting you from swine flu, think again - your best defence is you, the Red Cross says in a new campaign to curb the latest global health pandemic.

And it makes no difference where you live, they say - whether it's Manhattan's "Bed Pan Alley", a long avenue chockablock with lavishly equipped hospitals, or a dusty village without a clinic.

"Five simple steps are recommended, no matter where one lives, works or plays in the world," the Geneva-based International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies says on its website.

They are:

1. Wash your hands 2. Cover your mouth 3. Keep your distance 4. Separate your family members who are sick 5. Dispose of your waste

It doesn' t seem to lend itself to a catchy acronym, sadly - but the IFRC must have better things to do than work one out for each of the many languages it has to produce such information in. But if you can think of a good one in English (or any other language), let us know by leaving a reply!

The IFRC website offers a variety of posters and public health information materials that can be used to spread the word, including a video you can also watch here:
