POWEFUL QUAKE HITS SOUTHWEST

The BBC country profile for China is a quick, useful guide on basic facts and history.

Amnesty International has a report Justice Denied: Harassment of Sichuan earthquake survivors and activists which documents instances where people have been detained for trying to seek answers from officials about why their children died. It includes interviews with parents whose children died during the earthquake, lawyers, legal experts, scholars and rights activists.

The website of the China Daily, a state-run English-language daily, features the latest news and developments in the country and the world.

China Analysis is a blog that compiles news from state-run Xinhua and Western media. For Xinhua interviews with U.N. emergencies chief John Holmes on the aid effort have a look at China View.

Reuters.com has a China page with archives of stories and photos in the aftermath of the quake.

NPR (National Public Radio), which was in Sichuan when the quake struck, has some interesting reports and broadcasts on how the region's people are recovering one year on. It also has a blog page Chengdu Diary.

International relief agency Medecins Sans Frontieres is one of the few big international agencies active in China.

The a href="http://www.unicef.org/china/" target="new">U.N. Children's Fund also has a few reports on its work there. Click here for its six month report looks at the psychological and social impact on children and the work UNICEF is doing in restoring and improving education, health, water and sanitation.
