The
World Bank's Africa AIDS site has a useful round-up of the main facts and figures.
If you want more detailed figures, you'll need to trawl through the
UNAIDS annual report.

Women and AIDS
A site worth checking out is the
Society for Women and AIDS in Africa. It has plenty of information related to women and AIDS, such as the female condom, and access to treatment. It also has contact details for its country offices which cover the entire region except Somalia.
Human Rights Watch has interesting reports on women and AIDS in Africa, including the impact of marital rape and women's inheritance rights.
AIDS and food security
The
U.N. Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has a website dedicated to tracking the impact of AIDS on food security worldwide, but with a special focus on Africa. It has a good overview of how AIDS is spreading among rural areas and links to many reports.
Also worth reading is FAO's summary of the
situation in rural areas.
British-based think tank, the Overseas Development Institute, has produced a
resource guide for HIV, food and humanitarian action which points readers towards research on AIDS and famine.
The
International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) produced a strategy paper on HIV/AIDS for East and Southern Africa in October 2001. Although it isn't recent, it gives a good overview of the impact of AIDS on the region's agriculture.
South Africa and Uganda
One of the most powerful and vocal non-governmental organisations working in South Africa is the
Treatment Action Campaign which campaigns for free ARV treatment for all Its website has a good overview of AIDS in South Africa, as well as details about its campaigns.
The government's
Department of Health has a useful website, outlining its AIDS strategy.
The
AIDS Foundation of South Africa, which supports grassroots organisations, also has plenty of information about AIDS in South Africa.
The
Centre for AIDS Development, Research and Evaluation has good publications covering the impact of AIDS on South Africa's health service, economy, the links between AIDS and rape, the private sector response to AIDS and studies on different approaches to preventing the spread of AIDS.
The
Uganda Aids Commission is Uganda's official body that co-ordinates the country's national AIDS strategy. It has lots of information about AIDS in Uganda, including where it is spreading, its impact, and information on the government response.
