Application form for branches of existing AlertNet member networks
Only organisations satisfying the criteria may join AlertNet as a Member and access Member Benefits.
If your organisation would like to join, please first read the Membership Criteria and the contract below, and then fill in the form on the next page.
Membership Criteria
To be accepted as a Member your organisation must be:
1. Operationally active in humanitarian relief
Qualifying activities are:-
· Providing aid in cases of natural or man-made disasters
· Providing aid in cases of health emergencies
· Providing aid in cases of post-conflict recovery
· Helping refugees and displaced persons
Qualifying countries of operation are those which:-
· Have called for international humanitarian assistance in the past or are likely to do so in the future
And/or:-
· Are prone to natural or man-made disasters
And/or:-
· Are recovering from conflicts.
2. Non-discriminatory
That is your organisation should not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, creed or depart in any other way from the humanitarian ethic of supplying universal, unconditional help solely on the basis of need.
3. Non-profit-making
Many of the benefits of membership derive from valuable Reuters content and this is made available to AlertNet on the basis that it will only be used by registered charities.
4. Non-governmental
This excludes supra-national bodies like the United Nations and its associated organisations.
5. Where applicable, your organisation should be part of your home country's national NGO network
Where there is an NGO network in your organisation's home country, we expect your organisation to be part of it. Smaller NGOs who are not registered with their national networks should not apply for membership - we only recognise those who are big enough to register and take on the responsibilities that such networks demand.
6. Into at least their third year of existence.
7. Committed to sharing information with other relief NGOs, journalists and the wider public
AlertNet aims to get information flowing across relief organisations to promote more effective humanitarian relief. Critical to the success of this is the need for members to be willing to share information about their operations with others in the community, journalists and the wider public. Membership terms require that NGOs commit to:-
i. Updating the site with press releases, contact information, photos, blogs and video material
ii. Providing a link to the AlertNet site (preferably from their homepage)
iii. Authorising AlertNet to automatically scan their website and to either import its content into AlertNet or make links to it on various parts of the AlertNet site
8. Adhering to international relief standards (Sphere and Red Cross)
9. Known to at least two existing AlertNet members (please see News partners directory
for full list)
Our membership is a validated one. We take some care in making sure that all our members are good citizens and we will ask new members for the name of at least two existing members who can vouch for the professionalism of the candidate members' work. For new branches of existing networks, however, this criteria doesn't apply.

AlertNet is a humanitarian news service provided by Reuters Foundation. A key part of the site is news from Reuters. We provide this news free of charge on the public pages of the site, along with news from a variety of content partners and our NGO members.
Log-ins for the site can only be obtained by staff of AlertNet member organisations. Because of this, certain rules and regulations are necessary.
Access to the Admin pages of the site is restricted to members. Membership is designed for organisations actively involved in relief work internationally. If you wish to register as a member, the Terms and Conditions for Members as well as the General Terms and Conditions set out below will apply and you should indicate your acceptance by clicking on "I ACCEPT the above and wish to apply as a MEMBER" below.
SPECIFC TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR MEMBERS
As a member you will not be charged for taking part. In return, you are expected to contribute up-to-date information that will be of interest to relief professionals and general public alike.
Once your organisation is validated and becomes a member of the site, all staff are eligible for a password enabling them to log into the site. You must keep this password confidential and not allow it to be used by others. If you learn or suspect that your password has been obtained by another person, you will promptly notify us.
The kind of contributions we expect include press releases, blogs, pictures, features and videos giving details of relief projects you are involved in. We also expect you to add contact details for all your current projects into our Who works where database for journalists. We expect you to keep these entries up-to-date, and will send a prompt to members every four-months asking them to verify the information in this section. If you do not perform the update you will lose access to free Reuters pictures and the chance of funding from AIDfund.
With the exception of blogs, all this information can be uploaded to the site by the staff of member organisations themselves.
