AZERBAIJAN

Capital
Baku

Area
86,600 sq km (1 km = 0.62 miles), covering most of eastern Transcaucasia. Azerbaijan is bounded to the east by the Caspian Sea, to the north by the Russian Federation and Georgia, and by Armenia to the west. To the south, the river Araks divides it from Iranian Azerbaijan. The territory also includes the Nakhichevan autonomous republic, an enclave sited on the Iranian border but cut off from Azerbaijan by Armenia. The gradual rise of the Caspian Sea, owing to dam operations, has begun to threaten industrial and residential areas along its 800 km shoreline. Scientists predict the Caspian's level could rise a catastrophic three or four metres in coming decades.

Language
Azeri (official), Russian, Armenian, Kurmanji and Talysh.
