The country, known as Dahomey until 1975, is a 110,620 sq km (1 km = 0.62 miles) strip of land running north from the Gulf of Guinea; Its neighbours are Nigeria, Togo, Burkina Faso and Niger. Marsh and swamp in the south, forest and semi-desert in the north.

Language
French, the official language; more than 50 other local languages, principally Fon and Yoruba are spoken.
