9.6 million sq km (1 km = 0.62 miles); bordering Russia and Mongolia to the north, North Korea in the northeast, the former Soviet republics of Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan in the northwest, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal and Bhutan to the west and southwest, and Burma, Laos and Vietnam to the south.

Language
Principal language is Mandarin. Variants of this language can be found in the rest of the country, the most widespread being Cantonese, in the south. Ethnic minorities -- such as Tibetans, Mongols and Uygurars -- speak their own languages.
