ISRAEL

Capital
Israel regards the entire city of Jerusalem as its capital but the claim is disputed by many countries. Palestinians regard east Jerusalem, captured in 1967, as capital of a future state. Jerusalem has a population of 567,000 with 400,000 Jews and 167,000 non-Jews, mainly Arabs.

Area
20,700 square km (1 km = 0.62), bordered to the north by Lebanon and Syria, to the east by Jordan, the south by Egypt and to the west by the eastern end of the Mediterranean.

Language
Hebrew and Arabic are the official languages. There are also several languages spoken from immigrants' countries of origin, especially English, Russian, Yiddish, Polish, Romanian, and Hungarian. Ladino, a language closely related to Spanish and written in Hebrew script, is spoken by some Sephardic Jews.
