1.24 million square km (1 km = 0.62), bound in the north by the encroaching Sahara Desert, west by Senegal, northwest by Mauritania, northeast by Algeria, east by Niger and south by Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast and Guinea.

Language
French is the official language; Bambara is spoken by 80 percent of the population. Arabic and Tuareg are also spoken in the north.
