Area
14,870 Sq km (1 km = 0.62 miles) located on eastern half of the island of Timor, which lies off the north coast of Western Australia. The western half of the island is Indonesian territory and constitutes part of the East Nusa Tenggara Province. In addition to the eastern half of Timor island, the territory also includes an enclave around Ocusse (Oekussi) Ambeno on the north-west of the island, and the islands of Atauro (Pulo Cambing) and Jaco (Pulo Jako).

Language
Tetum is the national language, but there are some 40 dialects. Under Indonesian occupation, the use of native languages was banned and virtually all education was in Bahasa Indonesia. The situation was reversed after the country's independence. Portuguese is also used, although few Timorese speak it as a first language.
