On December 26, 2004 an earthquake measuring 9.0 on the Richter scale caused a massive tsunami to sweep across the India Ocean. The resulting devastation throughout southern Asia triggered one of the biggest relief operations in history as countries from Indonesia to Sri Lanka and beyond tried to come to terms with their losses.
In the hours and days after the tragedy, our Indian Ocean tsunami section offered breaking news reports, analysis, dozens of pictures from the scene, factboxes, viewpoints and graphics.
