Very intense tropical cyclone Ivan struck Madagascar as a tropical storm at about 06:00 GMT on 18 February. Data supplied by the US Navy and Air Force Joint Typhoon Warning Center suggest that the point of landfall was near 18.6 S, 46.3 E. Ivan brought 1-minute maximum sustained winds to the region of around 74 km/h (46 mph). Wind gusts in the area may have been considerably higher.
