This map illustrates net Official Development Assistance (ODA) disbursed (countries shaded in green) and net ODA received (countries shaded in red) in 2005-2006 by 154 countries relative to their economic size and population. The index is based on data compiled by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the World Bank's 2007 World Development Indicators.[1]
Recipient countries on the map are coloured in shades of red to indicate their Aid Recipient Index (ARI) value. Lighter shades of red indicate lower levels of aid received, while darker shades denote higher levels. Four categories have been identified based on the ARI value for each country: extreme (0-2.5), high (2.5-5), medium (5-7.5) and low (7.5-10). Donor countries are uniformly shaded in light green.
The ARI is a composite of three indicators, weighting the absolute indicator (total ODA) equally against the combined relative indicators (ODA as a percentage of gross national income and ODA per capita):
ODA per capita (2006) - 25 percent
ODA as a percentage of gross national income (GNI) (2006) - 25 percent
Total ODA (2006) - 50 percent
