Unprecedented escalation in the price of maize, Kenya's key staple food, threatens to deepen already serious food insecurity among the country's most vulnerable groups - the urban poor, pastoralists, and marginal agricultural households.

The GoK has intervened to mitigate the rise in prices by subsidizing the price at which millers purchase grain as well as setting two-tier retail price controls for milled maize.

The GoK and partners have initiated interventions to mitigate the impact of a probable outbreak of the Rift Valley Fever in the event that short rains are unseasonably heavy in risk areas in December and January.

The GoK's intervention in the maize market. That has expanded the role of the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) while reducing the role of the private sector could undermine future production, due to uncertainties in future policy pronunciations.
