Ethiopia - Alaba Special Woreda - Basic Map
03 Dec 2007
Source: Respond
This Respond mapping was aimed at providing maps for support of hydrogeologic activities in Alaba Special Woreda, Ethiopia.
Frequent outbreaks of water-born diseases caused by shortage of drinking water occur in this area. Rainwater in traditional uncovered ponds is not suitable for drinking and the ponds are breeding
sites for mosquitoes which contribute to high prevalence of malaria. This problem in combination with a necessity of collecting water from long distances affects public health, productivity and thus
the economy condition of the region. Moreover, a landscape is prone to be affected by soil erosion caused by heavy rains during the wet season. Detailed map (Basic Large scale) at 1:10K provides the
up to date information on road network and existing settlements. Very high resolution QuickBird imagery acquired in 2006 was used as a backdrop of the map.
