In response to confusing signals coming from Kenyan political leaders in the last two days, ActionAid says that it is time to put people and peace before politics and power.

The Kofi Annan-led mediation effort had given a ray of hope to the people of Kenya, who are keen to move forward and rebuild their lives. But, Makena Mwobobia ActionAid’s programme manager warned of the sense of insecurity and anxiety that is building up because of the uncertainty of the political talks.

She said: “The negative tones in statements by leaders from different political groups are a stab in the collective interest of Kenyans. We urge political leaders to put people and peace before politics and power.”

Whatever the outcome of the talks, political parties need to ensure that the country does not slide into another cycle of violence.

“Kenyans, especially those who are the victims of violence, cannot afford for this to continue,” Makena Mwobobia said. “Rebuilding Kenya is going to be a long term challenge. But an early solution to the political impasse is an essential first step.”

She concluded: “Even with a political solution, the plight of displaced people and victims of violence needs a careful and sensitive approach. And investments in rebuilding the country must work as an insurance against any further violence. Neither must they be used to amplify the conflict.”
