Organised by ActionAid, and choreographed by aerial artwork designers Circle Up Now, the young people formed a visually spectacular portrait
of Nelson Mandela with the message 'Freedom from Hunger' at 2pm on 15 July 2008 in Alexandra township, Johannesburg to music provided by Twenty Thousand Drums.
Nelson Mandela is the
figurehead for Every Human Has Rights, founded to celebrate the 2008 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Every Human Has Rights calls on everyone to choose to take a
commitment to human rights into their lives.
Richard Miller, ActionAid UK Director said: "A quarter of the world’s population, 1.7billion people, are now at risk of chronic
hunger and ActionAid has teamed up with Every Human Has Rights to promote the message that everyone has the right to live a life free from hunger.
"These young people are sending out
the message that hunger is no longer an issue of need and circumstance but an issue of justice and responsibility and that the world’s leaders must take action."
