Earthquake in Peru

Deutsche Welthungerhilfe (German Agro Action) is releasing 100,000 euros for initial emergency aid measures to help the victims of the devastating earthquake
in Peru. The money will provide tools for clear-up operations and recovering victims, as well as building materials for emergency shelters, blankets and sleeping bags. Relief work will
initially focus on the most severely affected province of Pisco. According to initial estimates, 70% of the infrastructure and 30,000 houses have been destroyed. Welthungerhilfe plans to support
reconstruction work in the medium term. Fear of aftershocks
“People are in a state of shock. They’re scared,” reports Jeannette Weller, Welthungerhilfe’s
Regional Director in Peru. “There have been a series of aftershocks. People are praying that the next one will not be as bad.” Help has been slow to arrive, as many roads have been
destroyed and the only way of accessing areas is by air. “People are streaming into the city from the country in search of help.”Working in partnership
Welthungerhilfe is
providing support for the victims of the earthquake together with their Peruvian partner organisation Soluciones Prácticas, with whom Welthungerhilfe has
been running a disaster prevention programme for around two years. This programme provides training to villagers, particularly teachers and schoolchildren, on conduct in the event of natural disasters
such as earthquakes, landslides or cyclones. On the basis of this, the participants develop contingency plans and designate shelters. Deutsche Welthungerhilfe and Concern are partners in Alliance 2015. Deutsche Welthungerhilfe has been active in Peru since 1969. During this time it has implemented projects costing approximately 41 million
euros. This year, 13 projects are underway to the sum of 6.4 million euros, including rainforest protection, food security and disaster prevention. Deutsche Welthungerhilfe is also
working with children and young people.
