Since 1974, the population of Ethiopia has doubled. This has led to land being over farmed in an attempt to provide for the growing population.

The south Wollo zone, in the Amhara region of northeast Ethiopia, suffered badly in the famine of 1984-85 and supplies of food have remained unstable since. The farmers in this area depend on rainfall for irrigation, so any change in climate can leave them very vulnerable.

Attempting to combat this problem, Concern has been at the forefront of efforts to help with sustainable rural development and improving livelihoods for small farmers in Ethiopia.
