At 0059 GMT on 26 December 2004, an earthquake with a magnitude of 9.3 on the richter scale struck the base of the Indian Ocean, causing a tidal wave that hit coastal areas of twelve countries.

The tsunami killed over 230,000 people and devastated coastal communities in countries surrounding the Indian Ocean.

Concern responded immediately in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India - three of the worst affected countries - to help those who survived.

Now, two years after the tsunami Concern is finishing its rehabilitation work, on time and spending all funds raised.

Helping over 50,000 people, Concern's rehabilitation work has included rebuilding houses; providing clean drinking water and sanitation facilities; repairing bridges to facilitate transport; rebuilding schools and school uniform distributions; replacing legal documents and training in income generating activities.
