HelpAge International is pleased to be partnering the Guardian Newspaper UK and 7 other NGOs, to find aspiring UK-based journalists who care about issues faced by older people in the developing world.

Enter the Guardian International Development Journalist Competition by writing about one of our three chosen themes, and you could win an assignment to visit HelpAge International projects in Africa or Asia.

Winning assignments will be published in special Guardian supplements later this year. Other great prizes are also on offer.

The Competition was launched on 10 March, with the financial support of the Department for International Development (DFID).

CRUCIAL ROLE OF JOURNALISTS

"They will play a key role in helping to raise awareness and understanding among the UK public of the complexity of development issues, explaining how people are connected with people living on the other side of the globe and, crucially, encouraging us all to play a part in reducing global poverty," said the Secretary of State for International Development, Douglas Alexander.

"I encourage aspiring journalists to come forward and take part in this exciting competition."

"We believe journalists are crucial in highlighting issues faced by older people who are generally invisible in development. The voices of older people need to be heard as they are a vital link in progress and have a role to play in the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals," said Jane Scobie, Communications Manager at HelpAge International.

BECOME PART OF THE SOLUTION Issues facing older people today have repercussions for everyone as the 21st century is the century of ageing. Poverty, health and pensions are all on the agenda. The HIV and AIDS pandemic has resulted in older people providing and caring for their sick adult children and grandchildren orphaned by AIDS.

By choosing to write about older people's issues you are helping to raise the profile of these important issues and you become a part of the solution. Your articles will go a long way in mainstreaming ageing in development and in the public conscience.
