InterAction is recommending that the U.S. Congress fund an additional $150 million in emergency assistance to help the still-increasing number of displaced people in northern Pakistan w which some estimates place at around 3 million people. Urgent funding is required to provide services in all sectors of humanitarian aid.

As of June 4, pledges for the UN's Pakistan Humanitarian Response Plan amounted to only 23% of funds requested ($129 million of $543 million requested). Envoy Richard Holbrooke announced Wednesday, June 3, that the U.S. would provide $200 million more for humanitarian relief. Private donations may be made directly to InterAction's member organizations that are responding to the crisis and which are listed below.

InterAction member organizations are providing shelter, health care, clean water and sanitation, food and education.

A regularly updated list of agencies responding is available at: www.interaction.org/pakistan

InterAction has also developed guidelines on the most appropriate ways to help those affected by overseas disasters: http://www.interaction.org/disaster/guide_giving.html.

InterAction is a coalition of more than 175 US-based private relief, international development and refugee assistance organizations. InterAction members have agreed to abide by a set of standards to ensure accountability to donors, professional competence and quality of service.
