Merlin welcomes fresh expertise to Board of Trustees

Merlin is delighted to announce the arrival of Dr David Heymann, Anne Austen and Lloyd Shepherd to its Board of Trustees.

Dr David Heymann is Chair of the Health Protection Agency, UK and Head of the Centre on Global Health Security at Chatham House, London.

Dr Heymann brings a wealth of health expertise to Merlin’s Board, having held various executive roles at the World Health Organistion (WHO), including Assistant Director-General for Health Security and Environment and Executive Director of the WHO Communicable Diseases Cluster. Before joining WHO, Dr Heymann worked for 13 years as a medical epidemiologist in sub-Saharan Africa, supporting ministries of health to design and implement programmes in prevention and control of infectious diseases.

Anne Austen is an academic who has dedicated her career to international health and HIV/AIDS, working for organisations including the United Nations and the Department for International Development (DFID) in Nigeria, Ghana, India, Pakistan, Kenya and Bangladesh. As a freelance consultant she has also carried out assignments in Ethiopia, Eritrea and Bangladesh.

Lloyd Shepherd, BBC Vision’s Head of Multiplatform Products, brings over 20 years experience working in the UK digital media. He has worked in senior multimedia roles at the Guardian, Channel 4 and Yahoo, as well as for clients including Tony Blair, Bauer Consumer Media and GCAP.

“This is an exciting time for Merlin as we welcome three experts in their fields to our Board. We’re looking forward to working with Dr Heymann, a highly respected member of the international health sector. Anne Austen’s experience will be vital as we look to work more and better with donors and government agencies, while Lloyd Shepherd’s expertise will invigorate our digital activities, helping us to better engage with the UK public online, ultimately facilitating and improving our ability to raise vital funds to save lives.”
