Weâ€™re delighted to announce that Liberian President Ellen Sirleaf-Johnson has nominated Merlin for the 2009 Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize.

Announcing the Hilton Prize nomination, Sirleaf-Johnson said, "As I searched for partners, I found Merlin â€" already saving lives in Liberia for over a decade, and already preparing to rebuild a sustainable health care system for our people.â€

The Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize is the world's largest humanitarian award and was established by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation in the US in 1996.

The annual $1.5 million award honours a charitable or non-governmental organisation that has made extraordinary contributions to alleviating human suffering anywhere in the world.

Merlin has been working in Liberia since 1997 and now helps to deliver a third of the countryâ€™s health care.

"No humanitarian organisation has been more instrumental in rebuilding Liberiaâ€™s health care system from emergency to recovery than Merlin," the President said.

The recipient of this prestigious Prize will be announced in Autumn 2009.
