NIGERIA: COMBATING MALARIA

Mrs. Monica, of Kassa, Nigeria, got to work immediately after the week-long training she received through the United Methodist Community-Based Malaria Control Program. She eliminated items around her home that could harbor mosquitoes and taught her neighbors to do the same. Then she helped her community by paying for local children affected by malaria to receive treatment and encouraged pregnant women to be tested as well.

Mrs. Monica is just one of thousands who are benefiting from the Community-Based Malaria Control Program. It is working to create a culture of malaria prevention, educating people most at risk about basic measures they can take to prevent malaria. Armed with the right information people can fight malaria by using treated bed nets, ridding the areas around their homes of stagnant water and reducing the mosquito population. Help combat malaria throughout Africa by giving generously to Malaria Control, UMCOR Advance #982009.

LEBANON: RETURNING HOME WITH HOPE

UMCOR continues to assist Action by Churches Together partner organizations in their efforts to help people in Lebanon recover from bombings over the summer. ACT partner programs are helping a community near the Israeli border that was particularly hard-hit to remove debris and ensure that the community is safe for the residents to return. They are helping people return earlier than expected by providing families with heaters, blankets and other necessary items.

In other areas, ACT partners are meeting basic needs like food and shelter while helping people gain the skills and materials they need to develop a livelihood. Psychosocial programs are helping children cope with their losses as well. Your gifts to Middle East Emergency, UMCOR Advance #601740, provide for these and many other programs throughout this war-torn region.

US: UM DEAF MINISTRY UPCOMING PBS DOCUMENTARY

The Rev. Peggy Johnson, pastor of Christ United Methodist Church of the Deaf and several parishioners will appear in the upcoming PBS documentary, History Through Deaf Eyes. The two-hour documentary covers nearly two centuries of American history. History Through Deaf Eyes will be nationally broadcast on March 21, check your local listings for times. United Methodist Deaf Ministry is an important part of United Methodist work and outreach. You can support this program by giving to UMCOR Advance #982562, Deaf Ministry.
