KENYA: UMCOR OFFERS RELIEF

Violence throughout Kenya following disputed elections at the end of 2007 has displaced thousands and killed hundreds of people. UMCOR is working with the East Africa Conference, Action by Churches Together, and others to bring needed supplies and assistance to affected areas.

Please pray for those affected by the outbreak of violence. Gifts to UMCOR Advance #982450, International Disaster Response - Kenya, will help those in need.

SIERRA LEONE: MEDICINE IN NEED

With approximately 500,000 patient visits a year UMCOR-supported Kissy UMC General Hospital in Freetown, Sierra Leone, relies heavily on the arrival of medicine boxes.

The Medicine Box contains 18 essential medicines and medical supplies that are enough to respond to illnesses and injuries in a population of 1,000 people for a period of three months. The cost of the Medicine Box is $425. Learn how your church or community group can be involved in this life saving program by visiting UMCOR's Medicine Box web page. Send your gifts to UMCOR Advance #982630, Medicine Box.

WORLDWIDE: SOUPER BOWL OF CARING

On Sunday, Feb. 3 many sports fans will be stationed in front of the television to enjoy--the Super Bowl. But on that day, volunteers for the Souper Bowl of Caring will head the line-up in an event to fight hunger.

The Souper Bowl of Caring is a youth-led event where thousands of youth from churches across the country will join in the fight against hunger and poverty right in their community. United Methodists are encouraged to participate by collecting canned goods and making donations through your local church offerings.

It's as simple as holding soup pots at church doors following service and asking worshippers to drop in their donation to help people who are hungry. Each participating church donates 100% of their collection to the charity of their choice. Register early at www.souperbowl.org and direct part of the gifts collected to World Hunger/Poverty program, UMCOR Advance #982920.
