GEORGIA: DELIVERING SUPPLIES AND FOOD
UMCOR Georgia delivered $190,600 in medicines and medical supplies to hospitals throughout Georgia, as well as emergency food supplies to those affected by the recent conflict.
The delivery of antibiotics, syringes, sterile gloves and other items were part of two US Government-sponsored airlifts for humanitarian assistance that arrived in Georgia on Aug. 13 and 14. UMCOR is coordinating the distribution of the medical supplies. On Aug. 16 and 17 UMCOR Georgia staff also distributed emergency food kits to 1,474 internally displaced persons in Tbilisi.

Theresa Nduko, 44 was selling produce in the market when the outbreak of violence struck her town in Nairobi, Kenya following the contested December 2007 elections. Her son was badly beaten and Nduko sought shelter at Star of Hope Academy school grounds in Mathare. While they still have not been able to return home, a recent donation helped Nduko rebuild her vegetable stand outside the school grounds.
UMCOR is bringing hope to thousands of internally displaced people in Kenya. Working with the Methodist Church in Kenya and US Agency for International Development, UMCOR distributes much-need medical supplies, blankets, dry food goods, school supplies, and more.

Tigran*, an elderly man, was sold into slavery in Chechnya. He was eventually returned to Armenia without any documents, his house had been sold and he had no way to support himself. With no other options, Tigran turned to UMCOR for help.
UMCOR's Anti-Trafficking Program provides medical, psychological, social and legal assistance to survivors of trafficking. Tigran obtained a new passport, received much-needed medical assistance and was accepted into a state-defined disability group so he could collect his retirement pension. He now lives in a state-run retirement home free of the fear of being forced into slavery again.

EVENT: HUNGER ACTION MONTH IS SEPTEMBER
In the US, 35.5 million Americans live in food insecure households, according to America's Second Harvest. Food pantries struggle to keep up with the need for emergency food.
UMCOR invites United Methodists to join America's Second Harvest in its fight against domestic hunger. In September, through its Hunger Action Month campaign (formerly, National Hunger Awareness Day), America's Second Harvest will host nationwide events including food drives, concerts, volunteer outreaches and advocacy work to help bring relief to hungry people in the US.

Yongor Kolubah of Caldwell Village, Liberia and her husband rarely managed to produce enough food on their farm to sell at the market or sustain their family.
After completing UMCOR's 18-week Farmer Field School training, she immediately applied what she had learned. Her first cabbage harvest yielded enough produce and seeds to sell at the local market. She allowed several people to use her farm to grow food for themselves, sharing her newly-acquired knowledge with them.
