UMCOR: UMCOR RECEIVES ITS SECOND FOUR-STAR RATING
Charity Navigator, the nation's largest and most-utilized evaluator of charities, has awarded UMCOR a coveted four-star rating for sound fiscal management. This marks the second consecutive year that UMCOR has been acknowledged for its transparency and sound financial accountability.
Only 20 percent of the charities rated by Charity Navigator receive two consecutive four-star evaluations, indicating that UMCOR executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way.
The four-star "exceptional" designation is Charity Navigator's highest rating awarded to select not-for-profit organizations that exceed industry standards and outperform most charities in its cause.
Charity Navigator works to guide intelligent giving and helps supporters make informed giving decisions by providing data about more than 5,000 charities and evaluating the financial health of each one. Click here to view Charity Navigator's detailed rating of UMCOR.

US: TRAINING FOR DISASTER RESPONSE
More than 60 United Methodists involved with disaster response in their conferences are gathered at UMCOR Sager Brown for the annual training academy. For four days, they are focusing on caring for God's creation through UMCOR's US Disaster Response ministry.
Through devotions, plenary sessions, networking opportunities and more than 30 different workshops, participants are exploring ways to develop or strengthen their strategies for when a disaster hits their conferences. Training topics include relating with FEMA, responding to pandemics, working with vulnerable populations, monitoring and evaluation to faithfully report how grants are used, and managing non-monetary donations.

When he became ill, Dieu Kahudi of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) visited a local hospital, but became more critical by the hour. Thanks to the life saving air ambulance services of the United Methodist Aviation Ministry (UMAM), a program of UMCOR, Captain Jacques Umembudi, a United Methodist pilot, flew Kahudi from his remote village to a larger hospital in Kananga where he was diagnosed with diabetes and received treatment.
For Captain Umembudi, emergency flights like these were temporarily delayed this summer. During take-off, his plane crashed into several trees before coming to an abrupt stop. While Captain Umembudi is now doing well, his plane was completely destroyed. UMCOR's top executive Sam Dixon blogs about the situation in the UMCOR Notebook.

This month, people across America are hosting house parties with their families, friends, neighbors, or churches, to support comprehensive immigration reform in the US.
Justice for Our Neighbors (JFON) West Michigan clinic is joining the Comprehensive Immigration Reform event by hosting a Families Freedom and Faith House Party where thousands of immigration reformers will gather in homes, churches, and ESL classes to build momentum for immigration reform. The event comes before immigration and reform bills are introduced in early 2010.
JFON-Texas and JFON-Arkansas clinics are taking part of the "Breaking Bread and Barriers" campaign supported by General Board of Church and Society and the UM Immigration Task Force. The campaign creates a platform for discussions about barriers to justice faced by immigrants and the possible changes to immigration laws.
