Dushanbe (ICRC) – Twenty-five Tajik students of law, journalism and international relations will be taking a course on international humanitarian law from 27 to 29 March to acquire a basic knowledge of the subject.

The course is being organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in cooperation with the Tajik National University, the Russian-Tajik Slavonic University – where it will be held – and the Red Crescent Society of Tajikistan.

It will include lectures by teachers of international humanitarian law from the participating universities.

"This is the first time the ICRC has organized a course on international humanitarian law in partnership with Tajik universities," said Murodjon Soliev, an ICRC staff member in Tajikistan.

"The aim is to place the course on a firm footing so that the universities will later be able to run it on their own." The lectures will cover topics such as the various types of armed conflict, the status of combatants and prisoners of war, the role of the media in armed conflict, means and methods of war, and the protection of civilians.

Subjects directly relating to Tajikistan, such as the role of UN observers during the country's civil war and the implementation of international humanitarian law in the country, will also be addressed.

In addition, the course will include case studies and offer opportunities for open discussion among the participants.

The ICRC strives to promote knowledge of international humanitarian law and respect for human dignity.

It has been working in Central Asia since 1992.
