Geneva (ICRC) – Jakob Kellenberger, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), is expected in Washington for a three-day visit during which he will hold talks with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and senior officials.

Talks will focus on detention-related matters as well as on the humanitarian situation and ICRC activities in some of the organization’s main areas of operations, such as Iraq, Israel and the Palestinian territories, Afghanistan and Sudan’s Darfur region.

Mr Kellenberger will also stress the relevance of international humanitarian law in today’s conflicts and discuss ways to enhance its implementation.
