NOT Economic crisis begins to bite across the world. Estimates suggest 40 million more people will be pushed into poverty in 2009.

NOT Increase in fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo leaves millions displaced and takes the lives of many others. Rape horrifically used as a weapon of war. Oxfam’s response includes providing water and sanitation in camps for people driven from their homes.

HOT Oxfam launches Trailtrekker, a new 100km endurance event in Yorkshire.

HOT Oxfam closes Tsunami programme, having helped 2.5 million people in seven tsunami-affected countries in the largest emergency program in its history. Oxfam received $294 million in total - more than 90 per cent of it from the public.

HOT From May this year, Oxfam has helped nearly 4 million people caught up in numerous humanitarian crises in over 30 countries across the globe. This includes large-scale emergencies that hit the headlines, such as the Bihar floods and the food crisis, as well as ongoing ‘off-the-radar’ crises such as Sudan and Chad.

NOT Progress in tackling climate change is stalled after the private sector triumphs in weakening the EU’s climate and energy package. At the same time, the UN negotiations stumble to a close, with little achieved after rich countries fail to bring proposals to the table.

NOT Cholera epidemic hits Zimbabwe and spreads rapidly through a population already weakened by hunger. Oxfam launches appeal to fund vital health and sanitation work, and food distribution.
