Details of Payment

Emergency: Clashes in Molo, Kenya

Date of Emergency: October 2006

Implementing Partner: NORWEGIAN CHURCH AID/ PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF EAST AFRICA

Details of the emergency: On 26 September, armed raiders have torched about 45 houses as the violence in Molo escalates. By 2 October, a total of 125 houses had been torched. People have fled their homes in Temuyota, Gacherega, Murundiko, Chepkinoiyo, Ng'arua and Kamwaura, seeking shelter in schools and churches despite the Government's assurance that security had been beefed up.

The violence that sparked after police released a rape suspect from custody, has claimed five lives and displaced more than 1,000 people. Schools are interrupted and thus learning is affected. Food insecurity has increased since the granaries have been burnt by the arsonists.

Security is very volatile though the government is trying to restore order; more than 500 security personnel are on the ground with strict orders to shoot to kill any raider. Residents have been assured that it is now safe to resume their normal lives.

Purpose of Response: ACT member Norwegian Church Aid (NCA) and its local partner the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) are targeting about 3,000 people in Nyakinyua, Sirikwa, Matunda, Temuyota, Gacherega, Murundiko, Chepkinoiyo, Ngarua and Kamwaura villages, in Molo district.

Criteria for the selection: The local PCEA parish with the local administration and other local churches will identify the most vulnerable beneficiaries particularly women, children and the elderly.

Proposed assistance: ACT member and its partner plan to provide relief food assistance, blankets and mosquito nets and basic building materials.

Implementation Period: Three months from October to December 2006.

TOTAL BUDGET: USD 37,258
