Geneva, June 11, 2008

A massive earthquake of magnitude 8.0 on the Richter Scale struck Central China at 14:28 (Beijing Time) on May 12th 2008. Its impact mainly affected the Wenchuan County of Sichuan Province, as well as other provinces including Gansu, Qinghai, Guizhou, Ningxia, Henan, Shanxi, Sha'anxi and Jiangsu.

According to the statistics of Ministry of Civil Affairs (as of June 2), 69,019 persons were killed in 9 provinces including Sichuan, Gansu, Sha'anxi, Chongqing, Yunnan, Sha'anxi, Guizhou, Hubei and Hunan, another 373,573 were injured, 18,627 missed, and the total affected population has reached 45.6 million. Public facilities including schools, hospitals, and roads were severely damaged, particularly in the following eight counties or cities: Wenchuan, Lixian, Beichuan, Maoxian, Dujiangyan and Mianzhu in Sichuang Province, Longnan City in Gansu Province as well as Hanzhong City in Shaanxi Province. Continuous aftershocks and geologic change have been threatening the security of the survivors, aid workers and volunteers.

Local ACT International member Amity Foundation immediately began providing relief assistance to survivors in coordination with their local partners with the provision of quilts, plastic sheeting, food and drinking water. An ACT Preliminary Appeal was issued within 24 hours of the disaster to mobilize and coordinate support to their response. This is an elaborated and revised version of the appeal following further assessment of current needs on the ground.

Within the eighteen-month implementation period for this appeal, Amity plans to assist 20,000 families through distribution of mostly non-food items, provision of psycho-social care, reconstruction of 500 houses, 2 primary schools and 5 village clinics, repair of 20 water systems, provision of emergency preparedness training and cash grants for the purchase of agricultural tools.
