Indonesia

West Java Earthquake Assistance IDN091

Appeal Target: US$ 177,052

Geneva, 11 September 2009

An earthquake of magnitude 7.2 on the Richter scale struck 143 kilometres south-west of Tasikmalaya in West Java Province on 2 September 2009. The epicentre was located offshore with a depth of 32 kilometres. The earthquake was followed by approximately 22 aftershocks. Heavy tremors were felt hundred of kilometres away in neighbouring regions, including Jakarta which is located approximately 200 kilometres from the epicentre.

An official report launched by the Health Ministry cited that as of 6 September 2009, the casualties from the earthquake were 69 people died, 28 missing, 370 people severely injured, and another 1,098 people with minor injuries.

ACT members Yakkum Emergency Unit (YEU), Yayasan Tanggul Bencana di Indonesia (YTBI) and Church World Service (CWS) Indonesia have been coordinating from the onset of the emergency and have conducted rapid assessments in the affected areas along with delivery of initial relief food and non-food relief assistance.

This preliminary appeal includes proposals from ACT members YEU and YTBI only. CWS are providing a limited rapid response with own funds and so have not requested inclusion.

Assistance proposed includes food and non-food relief items, community based health services, water and sanitation support and community awareness raising on disaster risk reduction as well reconstruction of safe buildings. The members have indicated that a full appeal proposal will be submitted next week to replace this preliminary appeal.

Project Completion Date:

YEU - 01 February 2010 (6 months from 3 September 2009)

YTBI - 15 October 2009 (9 weeks)

Reporting schedule:

Every two weeks during the first month, the members receiving a Preliminary Appeal funding advance will submit a brief (one-two page) Situation Report to the ACT CO, summarizing activities undertaken and progress made in the emergency response. Photographs and human interest stories should accompany the reports. Thereafter, reports will be submitted according to standard Appeal reporting.

Specific dates will be set once the full appeal is finalized.
