MARCH 27, 2009--At least 58 people are dead and dozens remain missing following a breached dam in Indonesia's Tangerang-Banten Province, near Jakarta.

Situation At least 58 people are dead and dozens remain missing following a breached dam in Indonesia's Tangerang-Banten Province, near Jakarta. Unusually heavy rain swelled Situ Gintung, a lake contained in part by a 33-foot-high dam. The dams sluice gate gave way in the middle of the night Friday, March 27, and at least 200 homes were destroyed or damaged in the middle-class neighborhood adjacent to the lake.

CWS response Staff from CWS' Indonesia office have surveyed the area and continue to keep contact with local officials to gauge a level of response. Potential responses include psycho-social and livelihood support for survivors.

How to help Contributions to support Church World Service emergency response and recovery efforts may be made online, by phone (800.297.1516), or sent to Church World Service, P.O. Box 968, Elkhart, IN 46515.
