Situation Damaging weather from Hawaii to the northeastern U.S. has spawned flooding, tornadoes and damaging winds that have damaged hundreds of homes and, in some cases proven deadly.

Alaska

Ice jams in the Yukon and Kuskokwim Rivers caused flooding that affected about a 3,000 square-mile area. Some 658 homeowners and renters applied for assistance from the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency. Volunteers from CWS domestic roundtable partner Christian Reformed World Relief Committee are helping rebuild many homes in Tanana, while Mennonite Disaster Service personnel are working in Eagle. Representatives from Presbyterian Disaster Assistance are working to organize communities for long-term recovery. Rebuilding and repair projects have a small window of opportunity to be completed because winter weather is anticipated next month.

Florida

Heavy storms poured more than 20 inches of rain in central and northern Florida during one week in May, a disaster that was compounded by a series of tornadoes in the area on July 24. Three mobile home communities sustained heavy damage from the tornadoes, with approximately 150 homes affected--three destroyed.

Hawaii

Tropical Storm Felicia has dissipated but not before it caused flooding concerns across the island chain. Officials have issued flood watches across the state.

Kentucky

Flooding, tornados and then even more flooding have affected many areas of the state. Kentucky's Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster is organizing long-term recovery groups in affected areas.

Maine

Heavy rains and storms brought flooding, erosion and landslides from mid-June to mid-July. Damage was so severe President Barack Obama declared eight counties disaster areas. Officials peg damage at approximately $2.5 million in the eight declared counties.

New York

Flooding has gripped much of upstate New York in the last two weeks, closing roads, shuttering businesses and forcing the evacuation of at least one hospital. The Native American Seneca Nation is particularly affected, after flooding washed out a primary reservation road and prevented 90 individuals from returning home. Several mobile home parks have also been impacted, with multiple homes in at least one community destroyed. Sheltering needs are anticipated.

CWS Response CWS Emergency Response Specialists have been in contact with voluntary agency, state and federal disaster officials in these affected states, as well as others where storms have impacted communities but no federal declaration has been issued.
