Cologne. "During our assessment in the rural regions north of Padang we found very few houses that were not destroyed", Nicole Derbinski, coordinator of the Malteser International projects in Indonesia, reports from the earthquake region. "The people here are in urgent need of emergency accommodation as well as sleeping mats, blankets, household and hygiene utensils". Malteser International provides help especially in the rural regions. "In the village of Pilubang with about 16,000 inhabitants situated in the Padang Pariaman district north of Padang, about 90% of the houses are destroyed and only few relief organisations have up to now found their way to Pilubang", Derbinski continues. "Furthermore, the rainy season has started and makes the situation of the survivors even more difficult." Therefore, Malteser International teams will provide 1,200 families in Pilubang with 2,400 plastic sheets, 1,500 blankets and sleeping mats as well as 1,200 hygiene kits and 200 kitchen sets.

In Vietnam, Malteser International continues its emergency relief activities for the survivors of typhoon Ketsana: In Danag and in Quang-Nam, Malteser International teams distribute hygiene kits for 10,900 families, food for 7,500 families as well as iron sheets for 1,300 families for first repairs of their houses. Further relief measures are prepared for the mountainous Tay Giang district which was also severely hit by the typhoon and the flooding. Already since 1966, Malteser International has been working in the provinces of Quang-Nam and in Danang.

The emergency relief in Indonesia and in Vietnam is financially supported by the Federal Foreign Office of Germany. - In order to support the emergency relief of the Philippine association of the Order of Malta in favour of the survivors of typhoon Ketsana and typhoon Parma, Malteser International has provided 10,000 Euros out of its own funds.

In order to provide further relief to the people in need hit by the natural disasters in South-East Asia, Malteser International is in urgent need of financial support. - Join our network of relief and donate: Donation Account 2020122; Pax-Bank Köln, von-Werth-Str. 25-27, D-50670 Köln, Germany, Sort Code: 370 60 193; IBAN : DE93 3706 0193 0002 0201 22; BIC: GENODED1PAX Reference : "Natural disasters South-East Asia" Or online at http://www.malteser-spenden.de/spenden.html?&v=6098&z=1&l=2
