ICDDR,B has dispatched an emergency response team to assist in the management of the diarrhoea outbreak reportedly taking place in the aftermath of Cyclone Aila in southwest Bangladesh. The ICDDR,B team left Dhaka on Tuesday, 2 June for Satkhira (Koyra), making their way by car to the affected area. The team consists of senior staff physicians, experts in the management of diarrhoea. An ICDDR,B audio-visual team also accompanied the medical team to document and photograph both conditions on the ground and the work of the team. Dr Azharul Islam Khan, a senior clinician from ICDDR,B's Dhaka Hospital, will lead the group and will be in direct contact with the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) to report on the situation. The team is carrying 1000 litres of IV fluid, 2000 packs of ORS and other emergency medicines including antibiotics, skin ointments, and water purification mixtures. As an organization with decades of expertise in the treatment of cholera and management of large epidemic outbreaks, ICDDR,B has always been ready to help when outbreaks strike. During the first months of 2009 ICDDR,B dispatched two teams of experts to Zimbabwe in response to a cholera epidemic that was killing thousands. ICDDR,B is always ready to answer the call to service and is pleased to be able to directly assist those affected by Cyclone Aila.
