The earthquake in Indonesia: Aktion Deutschland Hilft provides 100,000 Euros

Despite blocked access roads the alliance partners have already been able to help.

Bonn, Germany, 01.10.2009 - After the Indonesian island of Sumatra was shook by a second violent earthquake, the authorities are reckoning with thousands of deaths. The German relief organisation "Aktion Deutschland Hilft" has provided 100,000 Euros from its catastrophe fund. With this money the financing of the first humanitarian measures are secured. Although countless access roads were blocked by the tremors, the first support members of the alliance partners were able to reach the disaster area. Additional teams are on their way.

At present, employees of the alliance partners "World Vision" are preparing extensive humanitarian measures in the region: 2750 emergency parcels with food, blankets and clothing are ready to be distributed. In cooperation with the alliance partner "HELP" from Bonn the medical relief organisation action medeor will send a so-called "emergency health kit" to the region, which will be able to help around 10,000 people for three months long by providing them with medication. Additionally HELP is shipping bulldozers to the worst hit city of Padang which was badly affected, in order to further the removal of debris. The Worker Samaritan Association and the relief organisation Malteser International are planning the distribution of blankets, tarpaulins and medication. A team from Malteser which consists of a doctor, a nurse, a physiotherapist and a logistician are tending to the provision of emergency medication. Currently, investigation teams from the alliance partners ADRA, arche noVa, CARE, Handicap International and Johanniter are currently on their way to the region.

On 02 October 2009, the day known as "Germany is helping", Aktion Deutschland Hilft will give citizens the opportunity to publicly display their commitment. Aktion Deutschland Hilft will appeal for citizens to take part in flag demonstrations, "Germany is helping and I am too!" in Bonn, Hamburg and Stuttgart In the hours 10-12 o'clock, citizens can express and display their sympathy on central locations of these cities for the hundreds of thousands of victims of the powerful earthquakes, tsunamis and floods in Sumatra, Samoa, the Philippines and Vietnam.

Short profile of Aktion Deutschland Hilft e.V. Germany's Relief Coalition „Aktion Deutschland Hilft" was formed in 2001 by ten renowned German humanitarian aid organisations. The coalition's aim is to combine their members' individual knowledge, experience and resources to provide fast and more efficient relief after major disasters and emergencies.
