Bonn, 31.10.2007. Welthungerhilfe (German Agro Action) has raised 50,000 Euro in immediate relief for victims of the tropical storm in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. In the last two days, storm "Noel" has caused widespread devastation in the Caribbean. Particularly severely hit are the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Heavy deluges have turned streams into raging torrents and swept away roads and bridges. Many parts of the country are without electricity. Fifty people have lost their lives so far, over 25,000 storm victims in the Dominican Republic have been evacuated.

Immediate relief will be used in the first instance to support smallholders in the province of San Cristobal in the Dominican Republic whose crops have been completely destroyed. Other efforts will focus on aid for Haitian immigrant workers in the province of Monte Plata. Thousands of families live there in slums because they can no longer find work on the sugar cane plantations. Their makeshift homes have been flooded or completely swept away by rain.

Welthungerhilfe has been active in both Caribbean countries for over 20 years. It supports local partner organisations which promote rural development by building irrigation systems, introducing measures to protect natural resources and supporting women's groups. Welthungerhilfe will carry out these emergency measures together with these longtime partners.
