"I lost my 18 year old son last year and had hardly recovered from that trauma when this devastation overtook our family, adding to our agony. My elder daughter Nageswari had to leave her studies and work for daily wages in order to run our family, my second daughter Usharani is studying in 7th standard and my youngest daughter Shirisha is in 5th std", narrated Padmavati, a mother of three daughters, of Sangala village in C.Belgal mandal of Kurnool district. Her husband doesn't do any work despite having 2 acres of land.

"How can we educate our children in midst of such a trauma and uncertain situation?" questions Padmavati. She said, "I wanted my daughters to study well and earn good respect in my community but due to our poverty Nageswari had to stop her studies and start working. I was working very hard for my daughters' education but this flood has not only washed away my belongings but my dreams too. I have stopped thinking now as tomorrow seems to be bleak to me" said Padmavati with tears rolling down her face.

Heavy rains in South India have disrupted normal life of thousands of people like Padmavati in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. EFICOR has been providing relief in Kurnool one of the worst affected district in Andhra Pradesh where a total of 195 villages have been affected in 34 mandals (blocks), with a population of approximately 585, 000 people.

The situation in the affected villages is pathetic as one can see destruction of thousands of houses, death of livestock (which were once livelihood options for many families) and villages washed away. Electricity in C Belgal mandal is yet to be restored. Schools have not been reopened, there is a huge need of text and note books for school children which the government has promised to provide. Availability of temporary shelters seem uncertain as many people are living in the fields and embankments.

EFICOR in partnership with RAIDS (Rural Action in Development Society) is responding to the emergency situation. After completing village and household level survey in 6 mandals of Kurnool district, the team has identified 4000 affected families as beneficiaries.

The reilef team has identified 4450 affected families as beneficiaries and relief distribution was initiated in two phases. In the first phase, the relief kits were distributed to 2080 families in three mandals (blocks) namely Velugodu, Kothapalli and C. Belgal. 2370 families were selected in Phase two from three mandals namely Japadubanglow, Sunnipenta and Pogidala and needy pockets of Kurnool town. The distribution is almost compete and a special meeting is planned at Kurnool to mark the completion of the distribution on 13th November'09.

EFICOR has been closely working with the district administration especially the NGO coordination cell which was set up by the District Collector, Kurnool. The NGO coordination has been enabling the team to avoid duplication. The support from the governemnt officials, community and other leaders has been commendable.

The plans for distribution of the items was finalise in consultation with the community, government and people representatives. Revenue Divisional Officer, Mandal Revenue Officers, Village Revenue Officers, local church pastors were involved in the distribution process.
