The Irish Red Cross has pledged to fund tents, tarpaulins and other shelter materials in a pledge of \x8050,000 to the international Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent societies Myanmar Appeal.

David Andrews, Chairman of the Irish Red Cross said he wants to thank the people of Ireland for their donations to the people of Myanmar.

"Irish people have again demonstrated great generosity, with several thousand Euro in donations received over the weekend. I would appeal to anyone who can help to do so now."

Two Red Cross flights from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent societies landed in Myanmar last week, carrying with them 14 tonnes of emergency shelter materials, and four more flights are due to land in Yangon today with a combined total of 35 tonnes of tents, jerry cans, mosquito nets and water & sanitation equipment.

Official government casualty figures are now: 29,000-plus dead, 42,000 missing, about 1.5 million affected. However, unofficial sources now estimate that the death toll may be as high as 150,000.

The most immediate needs for the victims of this disaster are shelter, clean water and sanitation facilities.

Donations are urgently needed now so that we can supply emergency shelter and clean water.
