The International Committee of the Red Cross is working tirelessly to help people who are sick and injured as media reports indicate growing fears among the civilian population amid heightening military activity.

Irish Red Cross Head of International Dept, Noel Wardick said : "Needs include water, food, shelter and medical care. These people have been worn down by the numerous displacements they have been through these past years. Many had already had to flee this year.

"With your help we will support the International Committee of the Red Cross which is trucking in clean water to the camps and is handing out tarpaulin and other shelter materials for people to provide themselves with the most basic housing protection.

The Irish Red Cross is concerned that all parties to the conflict act in accordance with their obligation under international humanitarian law to preserve the lives and health of civilians, the wounded and persons captured in connection, that they do not damage foodstuffs and that they allow in emergency aid to the beleaguered population.

The Irish Red Cross is accepting donations for the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
