Malaria Prevention - Eritrea's success Story

Malaria was a major health problem in Eritrea during the '90s. With data from the Ministry of Health (MoH) indicating that it was the most common cause of death among adults and children over five. The disease is still endemic in Gash Barka and Southern regions. The problem of malaria has been given priority by the government and in 1998 MoH initiated the National Malaria Control Program. The program has used several vector control methods and has seen a substantial decline in malaria incidence. Since the Abuja Summit in April 2000, malaria has been reduced by 90-95%. Some of the strategies being used to bring the changes are: • Providing sufficient healthcare for patients • Protecting from the mosquito bites by using insecticide treated nets • Intensive community sensitization for the participation and collaboration in leveling, filling and draining of mosquito breeding sites • Raising awareness through mass media and other promotion mechanisms. Eritrea is striving for ways to completely eradicate the disease.
