Save the Children Australia welcomes the initiative shown by the WA Government in appointing the first independent Commissioner for Children and Young People, Ms Michelle Scott to the role.
“Save the Children has long been of the opinion that a role such is vital and I congratulate the WA government. This appointment supports our belief that we all need to engage with the community to find a lasting solution to the complex issues which currently exist,” said Margaret Douglas, CEO of the Save the Children Australia.
Ms Douglas said she looked forward to meeting Ms Scott in person to discuss the issues facing children and young people throughout Australia, particularly in Western Australia.
“It was very encouraging to hear Ms Scott say one of her priorities is to improve the lives of young Aboriginals, and the need to visit the Kimberley and engage with families to hear first-hand what should be done. Once she has settled into the role, I look forward to introducing her to our innovative programs operating in the region, meeting our staff on the ground and engaging with local communities”, Ms Douglas added.
Save the Children Australia has comprehensive programs in WA ranging from working with Indigenous partners to improve the health and well-being of the community; linking parents to local support services and providing children and young people with practical and educational activities in the East Kimberley region and metropolitan Perth.
